Winter Cold / J.J. Bundle Me

The cold has well and truly set in and I can't deny that I did a little happy dance when my husband told me it was snowing in the wee early hours in the morning. I had to crank up the heat a little more than usual today to ward off the chill that has threatened to eek in through the windows and door. I also couldn't help but wish for my mother's well-stocked wood stove. Nothing heats like a wood stove and I miss sitting near it and feeling toasty warm! I love winter. I loved it as a kid and I love it now. The only difference is now I need to wrap my arthritic knees to protect them from the cold. I bundle myself to protect my achy joints and I bundle my son to keep him from getting cold then getting sick.

To keep my little man warm I was given a J.J. Cole infant sized Bundle Me. A hand-me down, it has survived very nicely. I used it to bring my son home and again in the fall until now. It has kept him snuggly warm even when he refuses to wear his shoes. He loves to be in his car seat when the Bundle Me is in it. He burrows into the shearling lining and almost falls instantly asleep. I've just ordered the toddler size of the down version of the same thing which has a hood. For the winter I thought this would be best since my little son has a hard time to keep on hats and such. These are such ingenious things, I love them! They are designed in such a way that the bottom half can be left in the car seat while the top can get zipped off and left off if the need be. It can be transferred from car seat to stroller very easily and washes very nicely. the only down fall is that the thickness that keeps my little boy warm does make the car seat a little smaller. The end result is that the straps may fit a little tighter than usual. If your baby is close to maxing out the infant child seat than they might not fit with the Bundle Me. Over all it's well worth the buy, which can be a little expensive at around $40-$60.

Back to Reality / Baby Food

So you may have noticed that I haven't posted much in the past month. You'll have to excuse my internet absence. I participate in something called NaNoWriMo where people from all around the world attempt (and at times succeed) to pen or type a 50,000 word novel (or the beginnings of one in my case) in 30 days. This happens yearly during the month of November so I have been spouting words for that particular project and haven't done much maintenance on my blogs at all. I apologize once again! Now that I am back to reality how ever I have been asked by a couple of family members who've had children exactly how hard is it to make your own baby food. Is it cheaper? So I've decided to break it down here for anyone who might be interested.

1. Is making your own baby food cheaper?
My local grocery store sells Gerber applesauce (a 2 pack, each containing about 2.5oz) for $1.15. For $0.79 I can get a full pound of apples which, depending on size, can be 4-6 apples. making my own baby applesauce with four apples will yield me about 28 servings of 1oz cubes. So $1.15 for 5oz of food or $0.79 for five times the amount. A bit of time and you can save a lot of money.

2. It must take a long time to prepare, right?
Wrong! It can take as little as ten minutes to make, dish and freeze your own baby food. How? The microwave is a wonderful thing and since most veggies do well being steamed in the microwave it can cut down on time. Personally I steam or boil my fruits and veggies right on the stove top. It takes 10-15 minutes depending on the item and then I just pop the pieces into my food processor until pureed which is usually a minute or so. Spoon into container of your choice and place in freezer. Most things will last about 3 months in the freezer. My son eats the food far faster than that!

3. Does it take special equipment?
Popular to what the baby equipment makers want you to think, you do not need special equipment. All you need is a sauce pot, water, lid and something to freeze small portions in. That's the most basic level. I use a steamer basket, which is something everyone in my family owns, and Tupperware ice cube trays. Ice cube trays are handy because they let you freeze your food in 1oz portions (approximately). This helps to track what your baby eats and when s/he gets older you can mix veggies together to liven things up. Ice cube trays with tight fitting lids are one better since you can stack them on top of each other without any fear of them spilling, sitting in another veggie or fruit, etc. It all depends what you want to do. You do NOT need something like the picture at right. That little thing is sold for $134.00 on Amazon.com and you can only make a few portions with it. A blender or food processor will be cheaper at Wal-Mart. It won't cook the food as well like the little gadget above does but it'll be much cheaper.

4. How portable is homemade food?
Just as portable as anything store bought. I use the small 4oz Rubbermaid containers to package up portions when I head out. I know of one mom who found a dozen or so glass baby food jars on her local Freecycle site.

5. But I don't know where to begin.
My top three picks for books to get anyone started in order!

Now all of these have the same basic information. How to prepare, cook and mix veggies and fruit for your baby and toddler. The baby and toddler has additional info which can be helpful but it is the largest of the three and most expensive. It does have handy charts in it though that show when to introduce new foods. *ALWAYS CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR FIRST* This is is not written by a doctor and only your child's doctor will know what they need and when. The charts are a general guideline, nothing more.

The second book is the meeting in the middle. It's a little more expensive than the  last option but more extensive as well. It lacks the in depth charts of the first but since you should be listening to your child's own physician, it shouldn't be a big deal. Plus there's always the web!

The third option on the bottom left is the basic how-to of the three. If you are the type of person that just needs a couple of quick lessons and basic recipes before you start creating your own, this is for you. The neat little thing about this book is that it tells you right on the recipe page if the item is good to freeze and if it is how long it will last in the freezer.

Added Benefits:
1. Your food tastes a lot better. ever try some of the stuff in the jar? I did....icky.
2. You know exactly what is going into your baby. Make it organic, vegetarian, vegan or kosher. You make it so the only things going in are what you put in!
3. Some babies can have bad reactions to preservatives in store-bought food. My son was. He got a nasty diaper rash from Gerber Applesauce. Go figure.

So now that I think I've covered all the bases, go out and try it! It's not hard, doesn't require special skills and tastes great to the point you don't mind finishing off junior's leftovers!

Partners

I have a wonderful husband.

I have known this for quite a while but there are sometimes when his amazing-ness stands out, like this weekend for example.

This past Wednesday my hubby made an executive decision: I needed a night off and so did he. He made arrangements for our baby boy of almost seven months to spend the night at grandpa's and for us to get together with friends we hadn't seen in a while. I had to work that night but it was nice to go out to their house afterwards and have a couple of beers and not have to worry about my little boy for a night. I also got to sleep in the next morning which was a luxury that I want to repeat sometime soon!

It's not always the big things either. For instance for the past couple of days I had mentioned that I would like to change the sheets on our bed but we simply had not gotten around to it. Now our bed is a bit of a pain to change sheets on. It's a platform bed but the platform is sunken into the frame about four inches and the mattress is a queen sized pillow top. I am not weakling by any means but it is far easier to for me to change this bed with help rather than do it alone, not to mention quicker. Anyways, I came home tonight after calling and telling him about my particularly rough evening and after my usual putting around, brushing teeth etcetera, I went to bed. I noticed in the unlit room that the sheets seemed to have a different pattern and leaned down to touch them. I was so excited that he had changed the sheets that I ran out into the living room and hugged him silly. (Yes I really do like sleeping in clean sheets that much!)

To me, as tired as I am, the clean sheets are the perfect ending to a hard day and that's why I think my hubby is totally amazing.

Eating Like a Boy / Booster Seat Review

Yesterday was a very productive day for me! Yay! I got done everything that I had listed on my to do list and I was ready for my family who is visiting from Montreal to come and see our place and our son. Everyone was gathered around our bar height table nursing their glasses of wine or cups of coffee while I readied my little man for his supper. My mom came into the kitchen while I was preparing his meal and was shocked at the amount that I had made. "He'll never eat all of that!"  My response was that I wouldn't have made that amount if I didn't know that he would eat it. Over the course of forty-five minutes (my little guy is a slow eater) he proceeded to polish off every last bit of food that I had made much to the surprise of my family. Granted, at least one ounce of food wound up on his bib, hands, or face but he still managed to eat about ten ounces of food. At least I wasn't feeding him in his swing like I used to. When he started to put his toes in his mouth while I was trying to feed him, I decided it was time to move him to his booster chair. Cleaning pureed peas out from between his toes with a q-tip was not going to become a daily routine!

Never have I been so glad for the invention of portable booster seats! We have a Fisher-Price Healthy Care Deluxe Booster Seat (sells on Amazon for about $30.00) and it's an amazing little thing. There are two straps that allow you to attach it semi-permanently to just about any type of chair and three height levels to make sure that your baby is at the perfect height. The tray has three pieces: a lid to keep it all clean while traveling (or keep a dirty tray from mucking things up on your way home), a dishwasher safe top tray with separate cup or bottle holder. Remove the dirt upper tray and your baby can still stay and play in his high chair with a clean bottom tray while you clean up! This is a very handy little chair especially since it all fold up and buckles together to be no bigger than a large purse. The one thing that I would have found handy is if it reclined. If it had been a reclining version like the Fisher-Price Space Saver high chair, I would have been able to use it right at his first feeding instead of feeding him in his car seat or swing. We're one of those starting families that lives is a small two bedroom condo and space is at a premium. When it came time to decide between a formal or dedicated high chair or swing my husband and I decided that the swing was more of a necessity. I do not regret our decision. The swing is the best thing (I'll have to review that next!) and I was able to feed my son in that for quite a while without any problems. Not to mention that the swing is a life saver when getting him to fall asleep!

So I hope I've provided you with some fun and helpful info today! I hope you all have a good night and see you tomorrow!

YAY! Technology Works! / Excersaucer Review

You may wonder why I'm so excited! You see I've finally gotten my almost ten year old laptop to work! I'm writing from it now from my kitchen table while keeping an eye on my little man while he's in his excersaucer. You'll also notice that I've changed the layout once again. I was hoping to put in something fall like but I couldn't find anything that really fit the bill with three columns. I had to work with the HTML a bit to get the title of the page moved down a bit and so that the two lines of text lined up but I finally did it! YAY!

So any ways, since I mentioned earlier I do a quick little review of our excersaucer. We actually have two of the bulky toys. One was a shower gift and another was a hand me down. The hand me down is a Graco Baby Einstein Discover and Play Entertainer (currently listed as unavailable on Amazon.com) which was the first one that my son got to try. This one does require batteries but only for one of the eight toys on it. My son loved the three wheels each made to make a different sound (bell, pebbles and click) and it was the first thing he learned how to do. The battery operated bit is like one of those old 80
s memory games but instead of colors and flashing lights you have animals. As the baby presses on each animal (cat, dog, duck, cow and lion) he gets to hear the sound they make. If he presses the same button again he'll hear the word in English. If he presses it a third time he'll hear it in Spanish. so far these are the only things that he really plays with in this saucer and he's six months. It seems to me that he gets far more interaction with his newer saucer.

His newer saucer is an Evenflo Farmyard Excersaucer Mega. This one require no batteries and has seven toys/activities and a snack tray. By far his favorite is what what my husband and I refer to as his "chicken ball" a clear plastic ball with three chickens inside with little egg shaped pebbles that he can spin at his heart's content. He also enjoys the rocking horse that clicks when moved and the small mounted flip book. There are also a couple of toys that are great for teething that have been a godsend. This saucer also has a small mirror which provide him with tons of amusement as well. We haven't really tried the snack tray yet other than to hold a cold teething ring but seems to just like hanging on to it and jumping around! Since I did get this one fresh out of the box there was some assembly required but it was a piece of cake just following the instructions.

In this case I would definitely say that batteries don't necessarily make it better and would recommend the Evenflo saucer to the Graco. I hope you find this helpful and let me know if you baby prefers one type to another! I'm always interested in getting feedback!

*SO* Productive...

So I've done a lot today. Not nearly as much laundry as I should have but when do I ever?

I talked to the electrician today in regards to our melted breakers. He hasn't spoken to the wiring inspector for our town yet but he's going to the supply house tomorrow to see if he can find compatible breakers. I'm expecting a call from him tomorrow morning and I'm expecting the worst. The worst being that we will have to completely replace the whole panel. I hope it isn't the case but then if the breakers are hard to find now won't I just have to replace the panel if the buyers (when we eventually sell) as us to in their P&S? What a headache.

I did do something for myself today that pleases me to no end. I sat down and fixed up my other blog. You can see it here. I'm very proud since I added new pages and dealt with some HTML issues. YAY! I also added a page to this site under the "home" link on the little chalkboard in the upper right hand corner. I'll hopefully beef up this site too soon so look forward to that!

The Trials and Tribulations of Homeownership

So we came back from a great trip down to North Carolina and my hubby has one day of rest before it's back to the daily grind and school work. We've had a delicious supper with a new glaze that I tried on a salmon fillet when he calls me to the hallway that connects the two bedrooms and bathroom. "Do you smell something?" He asked me and I replied yeah, I smelled something like melting plastic. My hubby continued his investigation and pulled the coats out of the coat closet while I went back to check on JM, our six month old, who was sleeping in the bedroom. I hear him swear and the smell was stronger. I called the Property management company and they said to call the non emergency number for the fire department. The firemen came and took our electrical panel apart and lo and behold two  of the double breakers had melted. Awesome. Long story short the company that made the panel went out of business twenty or more years ago and if the electrician can't find compatible breakers we'll have to install a whole new panel.

The thing that really ticks me off is that this specific problem was addressed in our P&S agreement when we purchased the place. The building inspector specifically indicated that the panel and those particular breakers needed to be looked at by a licensed electrician and wiring inspector. I refuse to pay for the work that was supposed to be done two years ago!

Road Trip

So we've made it to North Carolina. We're here for my brother-in-law's wedding which is Saturday. I'm very happy to say that the total drive only took us about fifteen hours with a five and a half month old. I was definately expecting it to take longer with a younger baby. Most of friends and family have agreed that it take an average of fourteen hours. Altogether not to bad I think.

Tomorrow I'm making supper for an unspecified number of people. It'll be fun and informal bbq. I also get to go to a bookstore tomorrow!!! YAY!

Life in the Fast Lane

Life is running away with me once again. Three weddings plus birthdays, work and a host of other familial obligations have turned my small family's life topsy turvy.

Saturday we are off on an adventure. We are heading down to North Carolina for my brother-in-laws wedding. We are driving down with a friend and it'll be good to share driving. I'm not too sure how it's going to go with our six month old. I've done a couple of long drives before but I was able to stop fairly often. This time we'll be leaving at night so we can get the biggest bit of road under us while he's sleeping his night though. That will mean about nine hours of straight driving before I have to worry about feeding him. It's usually a fourteen hour drive though some of my crazier friends have done it in twelve. With a baby though I have a feeling it'll be more like fifteen hours. We'll see.

I'm also fairly excited since I have a gig when I get back for a play called "Lilacs" at Lesley University. It's a programming job and I'm looking forward to it. I'll have to bring JM along but I have a feeling that it won't be that bad. It's only for a couple of hours as far as I can tell and if I bring a sippy cup for JM to much on it should be fine.

On top of everything I think I'm going to try to do some side selling when I get back. A little thing like candies and nuts, bracelets. I think I'll call it nutty housewife. yup. OK well that's it for now. JM is waking up and not really happy....

A Series of Fortunate Events

So I realize that it's been over a year since I posted anything. In truth life kind of ran away with me. So a brief recap:

I went to Pennsic right after London. For those of you who haven't a clue Pennsic is an event that is part of the SCA (The Society of Creative Anachronism) which focuses on recreating the time period between 600 AD and 1600 AD of Western Europe. I take part or "play" in this society learning the arts and sciences of the times. Pennsic is a 2 week long "war" where 10,000 people or more gather to play. I had a wonderful time and was invited to be on staff this year.

I lost my job at Nashoba Valley in January after some unseasonal weather which worked out just fine since I was offered the Technical Director job for the Oxford Street Players for Lesley University.

I found out on February 23rd that I was pregnant and I found out on February 24th that I was 33 weeks along. I had seven weeks to complete building, clothing and lighting a show and get ready for a baby. I also started a business in December in making garb which had to be put on hold for obvious reasons.

Last but not least I am saddened to say that many of my friends are on Live Journal and persuaded me to open an account there so I can keep up with them...I hate Live Journal. It's restrictive to display options and I don't like layouts and how the account management works. It's a pain in butt. So I'm back to Blogger, writing and enjoying my freedom of expression!
